ARTISTS ABOUT ART
A work of art comes only from inside a human being. True art must be born out of an emotional need to open one's heart, completely ignoring external commentary.
Edvard Munch
Franz Kafka
A work of art is a declaration of freedom. There has never been anything so difficult for mankind to bear as freedom.

Jim Morrison
For me, insanity is super sanity. The normal is psychotic. Normal means lack of imagination, lack of creativity.
Jean Dubuffet
The true work of art is born from the 'artist': a mysterious, enigmatic, and mystical creation. It detaches itself from him, it acquires an autonomous life, becomes a personality, an independent subject, animated with a spiritual breath, the living subject of a real existence of being.
Wassily Kandinsky

The creation of the world did not occur at the beginning of time, it occurs every day.
Marcel Proust
Art is an act of resistance against dehumanization. It insists that even in the most controlled environments, people will find ways to create meaning.
Iman Washington
The artist is not born to a life of pleasure. He must not live idle; he has a hard work to perform, and one which often proves a cross to be borne.
Wassily Kandinsky
Concerning the Spiritual in Art
From the moment of my birth, the angels of anxiety, worry, and death stood at my side, followed me out when I played, followed me in the sun of springtime and in the glories of summer. They stood at my side in the evening when I closed my eyes, and intimidated me with death, hell, and eternal damnation. And I would often wake up at night and stare widely into the room: Am I in Hell?
Edvard Munch
Expose yourself to your deepest fear; after that, fear has no power, and the fear of freedom shrinks and vanishes.
Jim Morrison
An artist, if he's unselfish and passionate, is always a living protest.

W.H. Auden
Only the act of resistance resists death, both in the form of the work of art and in the form of a struggle of human beings.
Gilles Deleuze
Franz Kafka
A writer is a person who cares about the world, and who tries to make it better by telling the truth. If they lock you up for that, you have to keep doing it anyway.
Nadezhda Mandelstam
The artist's role is to raise the consciousness of the people. To make them understand what is happening. If they put you in prison, your work becomes even more important.
Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o
One of Africa’s leading novelists
To those who don’t know the world is on fire, I have nothing to say.

A great work of art is a kind of Trojan Horse. There are those who believe that this is all there is to the art of poetry — sugar-coating the pills of prussic acid with which the poet doses the Enemy.
Pier Paolo Pasolini
Every burned book enlightens the world.
There is no must in art because art is free.
Ralph Waldo Emerson
Antonin Artaud
Mostly I straddle reality and the imagination. My reality needs imagination like a bulb needs a socket. My imagination needs reality like a blind man needs a cane. Math is hard. Reading a map. Following orders. Carpentry. Electronics. Plumbing. Remembering things correctly. Straight lines. Sheet rock. Finding a safety pin. Patience with others. Ordering in Chinese. Stereo instructions in German.
Tom Waits
My art is not an answer, it is a question.
Gottfried Helnwein
The artist must have something to say, for mastery over form is not his goal but rather the adapting of form to its inner meaning.
Wassily Kandinsky
Concerning the Spiritual in Art
To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist.
Robert Schumann
Gottfried Helnwein
God and other artists are always a little obscure.
Oscar Wilde

Gottfried Helnwein
After all, people with a herd instinct hold mediocrity in high esteem. They praise it as having great value. They believe they are strong because they are the majority. The middling level has no terrors, no anxieties. They huddle together, indulging in the illusion of warmth. If you’re alone with nothing, and certainly not yourself. And how content they are with that state of affairs!
Elfriede Jelinek
Die Klavierspielerin
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect.
Mark Twain
I'm an outsider. I will always be an outsider.
Robert Crumb

Robert Crumb
What do I ask of a painting? I ask it to astonish, disturb, seduce, convince.
Lucian Freud
He asked, What makes a man a writer? Well, I said, it's simple. You either get it down on paper, or jump off a bridge.
Charles Bukowsky
If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery–isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you’ll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you’re going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It’s the only good fight there is.
Charles Bukowsky
Franz Kafka
We work in the dark - we do what we can - we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion, and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art.

Oscar Wilde
Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.
Edgar Degas
Gottfried Helnwein
An artist never really finishes his work; he merely abandons it.
Paul Valéry
I would like to paint the way a bird sings.
Claude Monet
Look at life with the eyes of a child.

If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.
Michelangelo
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.
Samuel Beckett
Creativity takes courage.
Henri Matisse
Echte Kunst ist eigensinnig.
Ludwig van Beethoven

Lovis Corinth
Was ich gerade mache...?
Karl Marx
The eyes are hammers.
Wassily Kandinsky
I am fifty years old and I have always lived in freedom; let me end my life free; when I am dead let this be said of me: ‘He belonged to no school, to no church, to no institution, to no academy, least of all to any régime except the régime of liberty.
Gustave Courbet
Acht Punkte-Proklamation des poetischen Actes
H.C. Artmann
Karl Jaspers
